Viniyoga

The Viniyoga practice is a breath-centric approach, where the yoga postures are tools to help cultivate a conscious relationship between the breath and the spine. Oftentimes we are unaware of our posture and daily patterns of movement. The Viniyoga practice method provides an opportunity to bring greater awareness to our relationship with the breath, the spine and how we habitually move; through this process we gain insight on how we can mitigate our dysfunctional movement patterns.  The method involves linking the parts of the breath to specific movements into and out of a posture; staying in certain postures while working with the breath is also an element in improving structural biomechanics and developing respiratory capacity. Recognizing that each person's structure is unique, function of the postures and adaptation is emphasized over form. Being with the breath is at the heart of the practice.

Parameters for participation include: the ability to get up and down off the floor without assistance, freedom from medical devices, and no active disc issues. Students with active disc issues, joint replacements, foot, knee, shoulder or wrist issues should seriously consider a personal consultation to learn modifications specific to their condition. Students who have difficulty getting down to the floor can look into aqua yoga group sessions with Dallas Aqua Yoga.
